Best Practices

CentrePoint is discussing the Canadian Code of Volunteer Involvement to improve our service to volunteers by adopting best practices.

The Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement consists of three important elements:

  1. Values for Volunteer Involvement
    Core statement on the importance and value of volunteer involvement in voluntary organizations and Canadian society

  2. Guiding Principles for Volunteer Involvement
    Principles that detail the exchange between voluntary organizations and volunteers.

  3. Organizational Standards for Volunteer Involvement
    Standards that organizations should consider in developing or reviewing how volunteers are involved in their organizations which is expanded below.

 

Organization Standards for Volunteer Involvement

  • Mission–Based Approach: The Boards of Directors and senior management acknowledge and support the vital role of volunteers in achieving the organization’s purpose or mission.
  • Human Resources: Volunteers are welcomed and treated as valuable and integral members of the organization’s human resources.

  • Program Planning and Policies: Policies and procedures are adopted by the organization to provide a framework that defines and supports the involvement of volunteers.

  • Program Administration: A qualified person is designated to be responsible for the volunteer program.

  • Screening: A clearly communicated screeningprocess is consistently applied.

  • Volunteer Assignments: Address the purpose of the organization and involve volunteers in meaningful ways – reflecting their various abilities, needs and backgrounds.

  • Recruitment and Selection: Reaches out to diverse sources of volunteers.

  • Orientation and Training: Volunteers receive an orientation to the organization, its policies and procedures, and receive training for their volunteer assignments.

  • Supervision: Volunteers receive appropriate levels of supervisionaccording to their task and are given regular opportunities to receive and give feedback.

  • Recognition: The contributions of volunteers are regularly acknowledged with formal and informal recognitionmethods.
